Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera reports that at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 13, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a US 50 resident stating that a female was shot at a residence and that a small child was taken from the home by a male.

Deputies arrived at the home on U.S. 50 and found Sherry Wall, 33, who had been shot and killed.

While the Hillsboro Police Department responded to assist, it was reported that police officers observed a male with a child at the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene.

When police officers arrived at the church parking lot, the male could be observed inside of the church, while the child was standing outside of the church. A deputy and police officer grabbed the child from an area outside of the church doorway and observed a male inside of the church with a handgun.

Sheriff Barrera states that the scene was secured and the building surrounded by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Hillsboro Police Department and sheriff’s deputies.

The Highland County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Response Team (SRT) was called to the scene. Entry was then made into the church, where a deceased male was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The male was identified as Joshua McLaughlin, 37, of Hillsboro.

The Highland County Coroner and BCI were called to assist. Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins was also called, and a search warrant was executed at the US 50 home.

The matter remains under investigation.

Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene has posted that all services for this weekend have been canceled.
