So instead of hand-wringing and worrying about the next few weeks, which has me in a state of perpetual hives, I decided to take a little metaphorical stroll through our relatively short history of elections, party platforms and other campaigns, which can’t come close to the theater of the absurd to which we bear witness.

  • Who would you invite to dinner?
    Sunday, October 18, 2020 2:04 PM
As one with a keen interest in history, I’ve often thought about whom I’d love to sit down with and have an intimate dinner and enough adult beverages to loosen my tied tongue and open up the guests to talk freely. One’s mind can conjure up all sorts of ideas and thoughts. My list of who I’d love to talk with is long and changes regularly.

  • Keep your brain power growing
    Sunday, October 11, 2020 4:48 PM
The human brain is the consummate enigma. Its intricacies and mysteries will never be fully solved. I think I like that. Not everything should be solved, even if we constantly wonder why and how people think and behave in certain ways. We’ll never fully understand our family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, strangers or, more importantly, ourselves.

  • Welcoming change of the seasons
    Sunday, September 20, 2020 4:11 PM
Fall. As some may know, it’s my favorite time of year. Our abrupt weather whiplash experience several days ago reminded us of winter, skipping right over fall. Not only was it an unwelcome prelude to the inevitable, it prematurely ended some garden harvests and pushed some plants and shrubs into early dormancy.

  • Is a more perfect union even possible?
    Monday, September 7, 2020 6:10 AM
Sometimes, when it counts, everyone has to win a little and lose a little for things to improve for all. If everyone is an enemy or a competitor, how do we build a community, much less a more perfect union?

  • We all need comic relief sometimes
    Monday, August 31, 2020 11:09 AM
Laughter has a way of putting some things in proper perspective. I know it reminds me that even when things seem terrifying and hopeless, a good laugh and exceptional humor have an important place.

  • Time for a bit of levity
    Sunday, August 16, 2020 9:19 AM
It seems like laughter and joy have been on hiatus for a while. I was talking with my brother recently to see how they were doing in a state where the virus is on the uptick. We were talking about our similar routines and how they are getting annoying.

  • Cabin fever has gotten to many of us
    Sunday, August 9, 2020 10:30 AM
In many ways, my routine hasn’t changed all that much during this pandemic. I’ve been fortunate to be able to continue working, and have continued being a homebody. I’ve always shopped early. I was glad when I could finally get my hair cut. But in my mind, and probably in most people’s minds, things do take on subtle changes.

  • What kind of legacy are you leaving?
    Friday, July 31, 2020 9:09 AM
An ethical will is prepared as a document to pass along one’s values and beliefs to the heirs. It doesn’t hold material value. It holds something more dear. It is a legacy of what one believes, how one hopes to be remembered, what lessons and values one wishes to pass to their progeny and friends.

  • Words we don’t hear anymore
    Monday, June 15, 2020 8:48 AM
I’m sure there are words and phrases unique to all parts of the country that tickle one’s fancy, that are used less and less these days. More’s the pity. Hopefully, this kindled some memories of good words gone by.
