Seeing the minus sign in front of the numbers on the thermometer for days in a row has certainly affected my attitude. Then I think how silly that is. I’m an adult. It’s winter. We’ve had many great, tolerable winter days. We need the moisture. What’s the big deal? I have food, clothing, fireplace, working furnace, adult beverages, so I can certainly get through a few days of inconvenience.

  • Trust rates essential for success
    Thursday, February 18, 2021 7:47 AM
When I heard that George Schultz passed away, I remembered reading something he recently wrote about the importance of trust. I thought I had cut it out, since I still resort to the old-fashioned way of keeping articles and other things of interest. So I went through the overflowing file. Lo and behold I found it. He actually wrote this a couple of months before his passing at age 100.

  • There can be too much of a good thing
    Saturday, December 5, 2020 11:02 AM
As I was sorting through one of my closets, I realized I have too many bags, too many shoes and too many sweaters. We all have fetishes. Mine are the above three. Well, I might have a few more, but let’s leave it there right now.

  • Where do superstitions come from?
    Monday, November 9, 2020 7:32 AM
Fate is being tempted, if one believes in the many superstitions that have traveled through the ages. Things like tossing salt over your shoulder, not walking under a ladder, knocking on wood, not stepping on a crack in the sidewalk and other things many do or avoid doing – just in case – show us that we are not immune to the fears passed down through generations.

  • There are ‘if onlys’ in life for everyone
    Tuesday, November 3, 2020 7:37 AM
Most of the “if onlys” have to do with things we wish we could do differently, with the extra help of hindsight. Life never seems to work that way.

  • Voting key part of our democracy
    Sunday, October 25, 2020 8:20 AM
So instead of hand-wringing and worrying about the next few weeks, which has me in a state of perpetual hives, I decided to take a little metaphorical stroll through our relatively short history of elections, party platforms and other campaigns, which can’t come close to the theater of the absurd to which we bear witness.

  • Who would you invite to dinner?
    Sunday, October 18, 2020 2:04 PM
As one with a keen interest in history, I’ve often thought about whom I’d love to sit down with and have an intimate dinner and enough adult beverages to loosen my tied tongue and open up the guests to talk freely. One’s mind can conjure up all sorts of ideas and thoughts. My list of who I’d love to talk with is long and changes regularly.

  • Keep your brain power growing
    Sunday, October 11, 2020 4:48 PM
The human brain is the consummate enigma. Its intricacies and mysteries will never be fully solved. I think I like that. Not everything should be solved, even if we constantly wonder why and how people think and behave in certain ways. We’ll never fully understand our family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, strangers or, more importantly, ourselves.
