The Ohio Constitution requires the state to secure a thorough and efficient system of common schools and to provide by law for the organization, administration and control of the public school system supported by public funds. These constitutional provisions do not give the state the right to operate individual school districts.

I attended the Hillsboro City School District’s board meeting Monday evening. The plan the administration laid out – which is supposed to keep my children safe while they are at school this fall – troubles me. Essentially, there are three options: homeschooling, online courses, or attending in-person classes.

"I find it incredibly interesting that while we tout the importance of public schools we also chip away at public districts by allowing funds to be siphoned away from public schools to private schools through the Educational Choice Scholarship. Public school districts just endured a 3.7% cut to our state funding. Do you know how much was cut for EdChoice funding that is taken from schools? 0%." – John Rose

Instead of complying with the Ohio Supreme Court decisions, the state created two additional systems of education – charters and vouchers. Both of these extra-constitutional systems are parasitical, private systems that siphon tax funds from school districts, which are typically underfunded.

Hillsboro, Ohio has once again made us proud. This close-knit community has pulled together to create an amazing example of what a peaceful protest should look like.

“School choice is admirable – when Ohio can afford it. But the Ohio Constitution, which every legislator swears to uphold, requires him or her to “secure a thorough and efficient system of common schools throughout the state.” That is, the General Assembly’s sworn duty is to adequately fund Ohio’s public schools – first.” – Thomas Suddes, cleveland.com

Your May 15 opinion piece “Fake News and Feckless House Bill 6” appears to confuse FirstEnergy with Energy Harbor.

The Ohio Coalition for Equity & Adequacy of School Funding, via a letter to all Ohio school superintendents, initiated the participation of boards of education in a legal challenge to Ohio’s EdChoice voucher program. All public school advocates should encourage the leaders of school districts to become involved in this effort.
