The story behind Hosea’s prophecy is the tragedy of his own broken home, the experience of which enabled him to write more succinctly about how God felt concerning the moral and spiritual betrayal of Israel. As usual, the parallels are vivid in illustrating the condition of our beloved America. We should be diligent to heed what God said to Israel then and apply it to our nation today.

Paul the Apostle writes to a wealthy Christian in Colosse, perhaps never expecting that the letter of only 430 words would ever be included in the canon of Scripture. The epistle is one of the five single-chapter books in the Bible and is addressed to Philemon. Written around A.D. 62, it was likely written during Paul’s imprisonment in Rome.

“Man goeth forth unto his work, and to his labour until the evening,” declares Psalm 104:23. We are all given the mandate to engage in honorable, productive industry. It gives the confidence of value in our lives and meaning to our existence.

God has also “highly exalted him (Jesus), and given him a name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:9). Let us be done with all the other names and claim our true Kinsman-Redeemer. Have you made this romance of redemption your own?

It is time to take the cut stalks of grain up the hill to the threshing floor, where the wind can catch and clean the crop to separate the grain from the chaff. Chapters three and four hold great anticipation for us in the week following – “Lord willing!”

The word “grace” has to do with favorable attributes. Noah Webster tells us that it is “to adorn; to decorate; to embellish and dignify; to raise and to honor” (1828 Dictionary). The word is used in the Bible chiefly in terms of either “saving” grace or “serving” grace.

Every preacher of the Gospel who has any character should want to proclaim the truth, and yet there exists on earth a number of denominations that differ in doctrine or teachings from one another.

Finally, do you and I know Jesus Christ well enough that we should want to tell others about Him, giving “reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15)? Would we determine to do that without embarrassment or shame?

“Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy” (Psalm 33:18). Should we not then yield our way to His? “For our heart shall rejoice in him because we have trusted in his holy name” (Psalm 33:21). It will be then that you can rejoice!

Benjamin Franklin wisely observed that “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” He helped to forward the advances concerning electricity but had no inkling of the viciousness that would be developed through electronics into the minds and souls of our people.
