John states it directly: “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation (satisfaction of the penalty) for our sins" (1 John 4:10).

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” As the infant year of 2017 is placed in our arms, it would do us well to rehearse these plain and straightforward words from the Bible’s first sentence.

During a rare session of holiday housecleaning, our eyes ran across a notebook paper with suggestions on “How to be Perfectly Miserable.” People like me are ever more on the search for material that would make up messages to encourage folks along life’s journey – so let’s try this one.

This is the perfect season, day and time to surrender to the beautiful wonders of God’s love. In the quietness of your heart at this Christmas time, allow the Lord to come – and receive your King!

Excellence is always in front of us. The quest for it gives an expectation for growth. The Christian faith should be a lifelong development of learning, giving and growing.

The day of common decency, strong virtue and Godly morality has prevailed in our nation to yield the goodly heritage we have enjoyed. It is no coincidence that God’s hand of blessing and protection for America became more evident as men and women trusted him to build their lives, their families and this blessed land.

America has a heritage and history that are Biblical in basis and Christian in concept. Godly men and women resolved that true freedom must come only from its Author. They valiantly sought divine sovereignty as the guiding beacon to direct the affairs of this new nation. The Thanksgiving season should take our thinking to the Pilgrims and their pursuit of freedom to express Biblical faith in God.

The Bible does not forbid Christians to defend their lives, loved ones, property, neighbors and the weak. God is not the destroyer, but rather the Creator and Sustainer of life. We have not yet discovered all the forms of living things which have come from His hand!

How is it the child of God is able to have such hope and comfort in times when it would only be natural to dwell on the grief and sorrow at hand? The difference is made in the focus of our hearts. We must decide if we will hold to that which seems to be right or to what God tells us is truly right.
